E.C. (“Ted”) Hayhow (1903-1981) was publisher of the Hillsdale Daily News for nearly 25 years. He began his newspaper career at the Pontiac Press in 1925, where he served as city editor for more than a decade. During the 1940’s, he was press secretary for Governor Harry F. Kelly before returning to the newspaper business in Hillsdale. Hayhow was president of the Michigan Press Association in 1959 and later served as president of the Michigan Associated Press Editorial Association. Colleagues of Hayhow say that “he knew small-town publishing as no other could, and he was willing to share.” Many editors and publishers directly credit Hayhow for aiding their careers and improving the quality of journalism in Michigan.
