Inducted 1986
chairman, School of Journalism, MSU
Albert A. Applegate (1890-1976) is considered by many to be the dean of Michigan journalism educators. “Bert” Applegate was chairman of the Michigan State University School of Journalism from 1936 to 1955, when he retired. Applegate’s career included teaching assignments at South Dakota State College, Baker University and the University of Montana. He was also a reporter and editor at newspapers in Idaho, Oregon, Montana and North Dakota. During his 18 years at MSU, Applegate developed friendships with almost every editor and publisher in Michigan and influenced the careers of countless journalists. A scholarship fund at MSU bears his name as does a reading room in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.
