Jim Neubacher not only met the enemy, he defined and personalized it for millions of newly enlightened readers. Unwilling to surrender to Multiple Sclerosis, Neubacher transformed the savage attacker into a teaching tool. The Detroit native and Free Press reporter devised a pacesetting column about disabilities. It established a new definition for public service. “Jim invited all handicappers to become involved citizens once again,” said a “Disabled in Detroit” fan. Neubacher’s battle cry? “If we want rights, we need to exercise rights. Let your voice be heard.” Neubacher died in 1990.
